Basic Introduction to Chakras
Edited by Margo Ross & Meredith Viguers, Reiki Master Teachers
The seven main energy centers, or chakras, are located along the center of the body in the base of spine, and in the abdomen, solar plexus, heart, throat, brow, and crown. The word "chakra" is an ancient Sanskrit term meaning "wheel" or "circle." Though the most ancient texts referring to chakras are Sanskrit, there are many other systems of belief (including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Kaballah) that refer to parallel energy systems flowing through the body.
Chakras function as valves that regulate the flow of energy through the body. They may open or close based on choices we make regarding our responses, feelings, and decisions for the circumstances and situations in our lives. When chakras are either closed or are open too much, we feel physical illness and emotional discord. If a chakra is too open, it tends to dominate the other chakras, and when one is too closed, it tends to atrophy, or shrink, from disuse. When all the chakras are balanced, we are healthy, strong, and growing.
Chakras are non-physical in the sense that most people cannot see them with their eyes. They are commonly referred to as vortices of energy and elements of consciousness. Think of energy systems in nature if it helps you to understand the way chakras exist. In nature, wherever energy sources meet a vortex or spiral is formed. Imagine cloud formations where weather fronts collide, such as hurricanes, or eddies where water meets resistance. Energy workers who are able to visualize chakras describe them as tiny, rapidly-vibrating cyclones of colored light.
Each chakra vibrates at a specific color and speed. The first and lowest chakra is denser and slower-vibrating than the second one, and each succeeding chakra located above it continues this pattern. Chakras vibrate slower than the ethereal aura around the body, but more rapidly than the molecules of the physical body itself.
The main chakra theories hold that it is through the correlating endocrine, lymph, blood vessel, and nervous systems that our chakras "communicate" with our physical body. These biological systems intersect, radiate, and traverse the same lines that the chakras do. Therefore, each chakra affects specific parts of the body and the functions controlled by the related anatomical system. Body, mind, and emotion all relate to chakra function because chakras are expressions of our energetic and spiritual bodies and are not bound by the physical laws of matter. Therefore, balance in the chakras and their related physical systems may be achieved through myriad energetic modes of healing, including color therapy, crystals, meditation, sound healing, and Reiki.
In addition to these seven major chakras, some believe there are a plethora of minor chakras in one's joints and other physical junctions, and also an infinite number of ethereal chakras lined up both above one's head and down below one's feet to the earth. The corresponding colors of the ethereal chakras are brilliant but, again, not normally seen with the naked eye. Because there are innumerable subtle energies running both throughout and around us, we most likely share some of these energies with the entities surrounding us (i.e. other people).
Therefore, the chakra system is one way to explain one's energetic and ethereal interconnectedness to everything else.
